BadgerExtra columnist Jim Polzin discusses Wisconsin’s win over Nebraska from Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

LINCOLN, Neb. — Being down two scores in the third quarter on Saturday didn’t faze the University of Wisconsin football team. Not this week.

Life had already dealt the Badgers too big a blow to worry about a game with enough time to right the ship, which the UW did in a 15-14 win over Nebraska. Former UW wide receiver Devin Chandler was one of three football players killed in a shooting at the University of Virginia on Sunday. Chandler transferred to Virginia last year after spending two seasons at UW.

Many Badgers players considered Chandler a close friend and the impact of his loss is not something they will experience soon. The team wore a helmet sticker with Chandler’s initials against Nebraska, and catcher Skyler Bell wore a UW t-shirt under his pads with No. 86 printed on it. Chandler wore 86 at UW.

“Personally, it was difficult for me,” Bell said after long breaks. “I was very close with Devin. … It’s hard to see.

Tanor Bortolini, UW left guard and Chandler’s classmate, said the team tried to play in honor of Chandler.

“The message was, what would Devin do to tie him up one more time, to get out here one more time?” said Bortolini. “For us to go out there, play like we did, I hope we made him proud.”

Leonhard described Thursday a balance between the need to prepare for the Cornhuskers and the emotional support of his players. When he got choked up talking to the team after the game.

“We need this one a lot, man,” Leonhard said in a video posted by UW Football’s social media. “For the program, for you guys, everything you’ve been through, for Devin. (Expletive) Proud of you men.

Junior receiver Chimere Dike, who shared a position group with Chandler for two seasons, said it had been a tough week. The game and the win offered a brief reprieve.

“To be able to rally the troop, so to speak, with coach Leonhard,” Dike said, “understanding that we were grieving but at the same time we had to go out on Saturday and get that win and play for Devin, I think we got it.” ‘we did a good job.”

by Netflix fantastic new family movie, Slumberland, takes viewers on an adventure through mystical lands and wondrous dreamscapes. The film is a reimagining of early 20th century comics, Little Nemo in Slumberland. The comic strip, which debuted in the New York Herald in 1905, was created by cartoonist and animation pioneer Winsor McCay as a spin-off from his earlier comic strip, Dream of the Demon Rarebit.

The full-page weekly comic featured the titular Nemo falling asleep and having dreams that took him on adventures in the fantasy world of Slumberland, with each strip ending when he awoke. Little Nemo in Slumberland is considered a comic book masterpiece and has been praised for its experimental forms of the comic book page, its use of color and perspective, the size and shape of its panels, its timing and its rhythm, and its architectural design. It was a groundbreaking comic that influenced those that followed, its style still having an impact on modern comics. Needless to say, this made it ripe for a modern narrative.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

Netflix’s Slumberland follows Nemo (Marlow Barkley, Single parents, fiery), a young girl who lives with her loving, down-to-earth father, played by (Kyle Chandler, Mayor of Kingstown, Friday Night Lights ) in a lighthouse in the Pacific Northwest. After the loss of her father at sea, she moves in with her stuffy uncle, Philip (Chris O’Dowd, Bridesmaids, Thor: Dark World) in the city. To escape his new mundane life, Nemo transports himself to the magical world of Slumberland while he sleeps with a half-man, half-beast “outlaw” named Flip (Jason Momoa, Aquaman, Game of Thrones) and his sidekick Pig, in an attempt to find his father. In doing so, the duo must navigate dreams and nightmares, while trying to avoid being caught by Agent Green (Weruche Opia, I can destroy you, in slices), which will lock them up in Slumberland for eternity.

Character development in Slumberland

For O’Dowd, the joy of portraying Philip was in being confronted with a situation that challenges his very nature of being. “There’s an old adage that the safest place for a ship is in a port,” O’Dowd said. “But that’s not where the ships are built to go. I feel like there’s a lot of that in Phillip. He decided he was going to protect himself from the vagaries of socializing with people. He’s not necessarily up to it, so he invested himself in his work and hobbies, not his people. And then one of his men shows up, and he has to deal with it. I felt pretty funny doing that.

Opia was able to find self-reflection in the character of Agent Green. “I don’t want to give anything away, but there’s a really enlightening and awkward moment where she gives [Nemo] a life lesson that I took from myself,” Opia said. “I had to remind myself of something so general yet so important, which is that you have to be brave in life and keep going. For me, that was a big moment.”

Chandler appreciated the feelings presented in the film, especially for those watching who have experienced similar grief. “It’s a moment when a father, saying goodbye to his daughter, is able to give one last piece of advice,” Chandler said. “He sends his daughter out into the world, and she has to start over. It’s her resilience through this movie, and she’s trying to figure out what her grief is and how to deal with it through this dream world. It’s so wonderful for all of us who understand that we have to go through this, especially the young people who have been through it and don’t understand it. We’ve talked to people, and we’ve heard parents cry and kids ask questions, and that creates a conversation. It’s all wrapped up in a little piece of film here, and I have a feeling it’s going to last a long time. It’s exciting to hear people talk about it.

Dream a little dream

Slumberland is not the first adaptation of the soundtrack. Little Nemo has appeared in plays, operas, comics, short films, and video games. An animated feature titled Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland was released in 1989, and despite positive reviews and contributions from Ray Bradbury, Chris Columbus and famed French artist Mœbius, the film was a commercial failure.

Although each incarnation of the story has been slightly different (tweaks have included the removal of overtly racially stereotypical characters found in the original comic and Flip’s transformation from a clown to Momoa’s Beastman in Slumberland), one thing they all have in common is the notion of existing in the world of your dreams.

The dreams O’Dowd had growing up weren’t nearly as fantastic as those found in Slumberland. “A lot of my dreams were based on sports,” he said. “I was kind of a sporty kid growing up, so I would have reinvented sporting events, replaying them in my dreams. I used to use it as a kind of emotional comfort blanket when I wasn’t couldn’t sleep at night. I was thinking about that memory of me hitting a point and Gaelic football, which was my sport. And then years later I played Gaelic football after playing for maybe 15 years, and i played it so bad that this fucking dream flew away. It was my version of counting sheep, and then finally someone came along and shot the sheep.

Slumberland streaming on Netflix on November 18.

UFC 281 has all the makings of a major showcase with plenty of big fights all over the map. Even with two championships lined up for the evening, fans have their eyes on the battle between Dustin Poirier and Michael Chandler. These two men have a reputation for action and are the perfect pair to produce a “Fight of the Year” candidate. Poirier’s run under the Zuffa banner is filled with action-packed combat. From his upset victory over then highly touted prospect Josh Grispi at UFC 125 in 2011, to his last victory over Conor McGregor in 2021, Poirier has been a model citizen for the UFC. Even in his defeats, he pushes his opponents to bring out the best in them. However, he expressed some initial frustrations with getting a fight booked nearly a year after his last taste of action.

“At first I was a little frustrated trying to fight, but then life happens,” Poirier said during UFC 281 media. , I couldn’t hear anything. But things fell into place.”

Booking that fight against Chandler is what set itself up for Poirier. It’s an intriguing fight that stood out as a potential matchup when Chandler first signed with the UFC in 2020. The two men went back and forth in a way that led many to believe that There was some animosity between the two competitors.

“Every fight is a bit personal to me. We’re going to go out there and try to hurt each other,” Poirier said. “It’s every fight, but it’s just like always.”

Chandler vs. Poirier has fight of the year potential

Chandler managed to right the ship in his last outing when he stopped Tony Ferguson at UFC 274. Prior to that, he dropped back-to-back fights with Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira, both filled with exceptional violence.

As a former interim champion, picking up a win at UFC 281 could help Poirier get back into the title picture, but for now his focus is on coming out of the Octagon with the win.

“Nothing is ever clear in this sport, especially in the lightweight division,” Poirier said. “None of that matters until Saturday night. First, I have to raise my hand.

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Ghosts Season 2, Episode 6, “The Baby Bjorn.”]

It’s not every day that you find out you’re living down the road from a long-lost relative without your knowledge, but that was exactly the case for Ghosts‘ Viking resident, Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) in the final episode, “The Baby Bjorn”.

The episode offered new insight into the muscular figure’s past as a flashback revealed Thorfinn’s role as baby Bjorn’s father. In the years since leaving Norway, Bjorn (Christian Jadah) has grown up and sought his father in America to perish on the land now owned by the Farnsbys, Margaret (Kathryn Greenwood) and Henry (Mark Linn-Baker). “Two ship lengths” as the characters say in the series.

“It’s kind of a big reveal,” Long told TV Insider. “So it’s just a treat really, and also it’s like, ‘wait, wait, I have a kid. That’s awesome!’ It’s doubly thrilling. As viewers will recall, Thorfinn perished on the plot of land that would one day belong to Hetty’s (Rebecca Wisocky) family and at the Woodstone site, after his crew left him behind him.

(Credit: Bertrand Calmeau/CBS)

All this time he thought he was alone, but Bjorn hasn’t gone too far for several hundred years. And rest assured, Bjorn will always be a part of the show as Long teases, “I’m excited to see where this is going. Obviously, we’re not just going to introduce Bjorn to you and ship him right away.

This means there will definitely be more screaming, something that certainly played a major role in the episode as Sam (Rose McIver) did his best to connect Thorfinn to his son after meeting Bjorn at the sale. of the Farnsby’s garage. At Jay’s (Utkarsh Ambudkar) suggestion, Sam arranged for Bjorn and Thorfinn to communicate by shouting at each other from the windows of their respective estates.

So, was Long more tense from the extra shouting? “I think my body has acclimated to this new lifestyle,” the actor laughs. I don’t even know what Thorfinn looks like. Like a dragon had sex with a grizzly bear and bonded with a trucker? he asks. “Like, what’s going on with this thing? But my body adapted.

Ghosts Season 2

(Credit: CBS)

Filming the father-son reunion was just as separate as their on-screen lives as ghosts, as Long reveals, “[I was yelling] to a tennis ball, pretending it’s my long-lost son that I’ve never seen. I didn’t even know what he looked like so it’s really interesting. Although they look a lot alike, Long reveals that he only met Jadah “after this whole episode was filmed.”

Although Long acknowledges that the actor may have seen an episode or two of Ghosts before taking on the role of Bjorn, their similarities were just as apparent to him. The reunion almost didn’t happen on screen because of the Viking’s stubbornness to find out that Bjorn had married a Danish girl.

Thorfinn hates the Danes, and he promises to instill that hatred before he leaves behind a baby Bjorn on his fatal journey to America. Unsure if he’ll be able to get past it, Long thinks Thorfinn’s prejudices run deeper than stories of warring Viking bands. “I think we will learn [more]. I played as if maybe Thorfinn’s father was killed by Danes and that’s why he hates them. Only time will tell for sure.

Luckily, Thorfinn’s other Woodstone ghosts urge him to put his disappointment aside to speak with Bjorn through property sharing, showing a more nurturing side to the brutal figure that’s softened upon hearing Bjorn say the word “father.” “I connect with that side of Thorfinn,” Long says of the wilder side of his character. “I could also connect to nurturing aspects,” he adds. “There’s a lot of Thorfinn in me. I look like a big guy, but if you ask my wife, I’m a little teddy bear. I like going to the grocery store [and] cook for my family.

While we can’t see that nurturing side play out up close and personal with her son Bjorn, Long acknowledges that fans might see it come out in her interactions with Flower (Sheila Carrasco). The Viking’s crush on the feisty Hippie has been an ongoing thing since Season 1, and Long teases, “I think the fact that Flower even entertains any aspect of Thorfinn’s advances is huge. He’s got an opportunity, he’ll take a few swings and I think it’s fun to watch [him] try to convince her.

Stay tuned to see how Thorfinn’s rapidly evolving ghost life unfolds as Season 2 continues on CBS.

After winning their Sunday opener against the Broncos, the 1-3 Raiders will face the Chiefs on “Monday Night Football” at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The opportunity to win a second game in a row and enter their bye week 2-3 is appealing to Raiders fans, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have questions.

Here’s a sample of what arrived in the mailbag this week:

Dana Wagner (@DanaNews3LV): It looks like Chandler Jones has been a disappointment so far. Do you agree?

Vincent Bonsignore: There’s no doubt Jones didn’t post the numbers many were hoping for when the Raiders signed him in the offseason. They attributed some of his lack of numbers to the way they ask him to play, but there’s no doubt they signed him to get after quarterback and get sacks. This does not happen.

That said, Jones appeared to be unfollowed in the second half against the Broncos and became a factor in the pass rush. If he can build on that momentum, the sacks will come.

JV (@JDolla09): The keys to a win and positivity in the bye week?

bonsignore: The Raiders need to do a better job in the red zone, as the Chiefs usually force teams to meet on the track. The Raiders are 27th in the NFL in red-zone touchdown percentage at 44.44%, and that number must be close to 60% against Kansas City. Conversely, the Raiders’ defense needs to get going quickly to give the offense a chance to build cushion. Winning the turnover and the penalty battle is obviously also important.

Manny (@Manflo619): What’s going on with Tyron Johnson?

bonsignore: For some reason, Johnson couldn’t work his way into the offensive rotation and was waived on Friday.

K Piper (@KieranKpiper709): Do you see the Raiders taking an inside defensive lineman in Round 1 or Round 2 of the draft next year?

bonsignore: Best player available.

Feliz Esparca (@fele_esparza): What do you think of the defense giving up 23 points to Denver’s anemic offense? I think offense will hopefully succeed sooner rather than later, but is defense a major concern?

bonsignore: Slightly, of course. But keep in mind that the Raiders only gave up seven points in the second half, so that’s a good sign. The key now is to start faster.

Bill Dalrymple (@maysvillebill): Is there any truth that Derek Carr is not allowed to hear outside of a called room?

bonsignore: Carr has the final say on the Raiders game, based on the defensive look. Typically, he arrives at the line of scrimmage with several plays to choose from – the primary play and options depending on how the defense is lined up. He has full autonomy to make this change. It’s important to keep in mind that quarterbacks can’t just dig into the playbook at the line of scrimmage, as each play is tied to a specific group of personnel. So when people talk to call a beep, it must match the field staff group. Their room for maneuver is much more restricted than one might think.

@ronnietaylor23 (@rtaylor1623): Will Blake Martinez see the pitch? Denzel Perryman practiced, but what is his status?

bonsignore: Martinez was signed to the active roster on Friday, a pretty good sign he’ll play against the Chiefs. Perryman was in full practice on Friday, which bodes well for him.

On Wednesday, Oct. 5, Kaulig Racing announced AJ Allmendinger would move to full-time NASCAR Cup Series racing, leaving the #16 Xfinity Series car open. He will be replaced by Chandler Smith, arguably the hottest driver in the Camping World Truck Series right now.

The move not only means a well-deserved move to the Xfinity Series for Smith, but also creates a hole for Toyota, as Kyle Busch’s move to Richard Childress Racing means Toyota loses its best – and truly the only – feeder team in the world. Truck Series.

David Wilson, president of Toyota Racing Development, had expressed his intention to keep all current Kyle Busch Motorsports drivers within the Toyota family – Smith, Corey Heim and John Hunter Nemechek. Smith’s move to Kaulig threw a wrench into that.

Nemechek will more than likely fill one of Joe Gibbs Racing’s Xfinity Series seats, as there will be at least one open seat – No. 19, which Brandon Jones will leave at the end of the season to join JR Motorsports.

Heim will more than likely remain in the Truck Series for another season, but if TRD intends to keep him, they need to find a team that will develop him to progress in future seasons, and at the moment there is no no teams to do it. , unless a team changes manufacturers (ThorSport Racing and Halmar Friesen Racing are Toyota teams, but both are not true development teams).

There are reports that David Gilliland Racing will return to Toyota and Heim will join for the 2023 season. That would be the best case scenario for Toyota – getting a multi-truck team to change manufacturers and one of its drivers to stay. changing teams. Because other than that, TRD riders who want to upgrade will change manufacturers or take the bold leap straight to the Xfinity series.

Although the former seems like the more likely option if that were the case. Smith is another future former Toyota driver to move to Chevrolet. Drivers like Noah Gragson, William Byron and now Jones are all drivers who switched from Toyota to Chevy (and look where they are now). Toyota has had a serious problem finding places in the top series for its talent pool, and now its number one feeder team in the Truck Series is also on the way out.

The question then becomes: who will replace Smith in truck #18? Will TRD let yet another driver get away? KBM is now at a crossroads to find new drivers. The team could also try to bring two-time ARCA Menards Series East champion Sammy Smith back to Chevy, but other than Ty Gibbs, Smith is a driver that TRD will fight everyone to stay at this point.

So what about Chevy development? In ARCA, drivers such as Nick Sanchez, Daniel Dye and Rajah Caruth are tearing up the track (they are the top three in ARCA points heading into the final this weekend in Toledo), but all will likely stay another year to develop even further. . The closest person to get on would probably be Dye, but GMS Racing would put him in a truck sooner than let KBM pull him.

Not only is Toyota fighting to keep its drivers from changing manufacturers, KBM now has to find a TRD driver who can either jump ship with the team or now has to, in essence, scramble to find a Chevy driver to place in No. 18 next season.

2023 is going to be a big year for Toyota as it needs to find drivers and teams, preferably as soon as possible. And we all thought the silly season was winding down after Kyle Busch was announced to RCR.

It would be hard to find any statistical measure by which Chandler Jones had the significant impact the Raiders expected when they signed him to a huge free agent deal this offseason.

That doesn’t mean he hasn’t made his presence felt for the improved defensive unit.

“He makes a lot of plays that don’t show up in the stats,” coach Josh McDaniels said Monday. “And it probably won’t be good enough for everyone to listen to, but he’s making plays in the running game. He took several detention penalties yesterday. I mean, there’s ways to produce and there is a way to impact the game beyond the one column everyone is looking for.

Jones, 32, has not been sacked in four games, the longest drought to start a season in his professional career. He’s been credited with eight quarterback pressures, tied for 52nd among NFL leading rushers, according to Pro Football Focus.

That same site gave Jones his best rating of the season by far on Sunday as he began to make his presence felt.

McDaniels said Jones and the rest of the group up front put a lot of pressure on the Broncos offensive line and allowed plays to be made behind them.

“I think the impact is sometimes, if you look at it and measure it just by a column, you can misjudge it a little bit,” McDaniels said. “I like the way he plays. I like the effort with which he plays.

Jones also earned the respect of his teammates, including his locker room neighbor, Divine Deablo.

“I ask him questions every day,” the linebacker said. “It’s about the details. I love it. He helps us a lot. »

In protocol

Denzel Perryman left Sunday’s game to be checked for a possible concussion. McDaniels confirmed Monday that the Raiders linebacker is within league protocol.

“We’re going to work on it this week,” McDaniels said.

Shut up

After Sunday’s victory, Maxx Crosby said the number of Broncos fans at Allegiant Stadium was noticeable.

Center Andre James added Monday that their presence actually had an impact on the offensive signal. “We had to do a silent count, which we weren’t expecting.”

The next home game is Oct. 23 against the Texans, a fanbase that traditionally doesn’t travel exceptionally well.

Put in place

The Raiders lined up Josh Jacobs at fullback for a short-range play against the Cardinals in Week 2 and gave him the ball as the first man. He landed a first down.

McDaniels took advantage of the Broncos seeing this play on film with a key third-game call on Sunday.

Jacobs lined up at the back on a third-and-2 play on what turned out to be the deciding drive. As Denver’s defense pointed it out and seemed to believe the play was sniffed, the Raiders used Jacobs as a decoy and threw the ball to Zamir White for a big win instead.

“They noticed he was there (in the back), what they should do is defend well,” McDaniels said. “We felt like we might have an advantage to send the ball into the corner if everyone tried to play inside, so I thought Derek had done a good job of throwing it well and then Zamir obviously overtook everyone in the area.”

Jacobs rushed for a career-high 144 yards, but the Raiders also believe they have special talent in white. The only problem is that Jacobs never seems to need a break, according to McDaniels.

“I think it’s a tribute to the kid and how much he loves football, how much he competes game after game,” McDaniels said of Jacobs.

NEARLY 1,000 people have signed a petition calling for a ban on large pet snakes in Britain.

The petition was launched last month after an albino Burmese python – around 18ft long – was seen sneaking through the window of a property in Ribbles Close, Chandler’s Ford.

As noted, the snake shocked street residents who were struck with fear at the sight.

John Williams, a 30-year-old cruise port worker, started a petition the day after the escape.

His petition has now been supported by 981 people.

Signatory Sheena Nelson said: “All exotic pets should be banned, people get fed up with them or they get too big they let them out and then our country has invasive species.”

Samantha Michaels added: ‘It is despicable that these deadly animals are allowed to be pets.

Robert Wheeler added: “I’m signing because I totally agree with all the suggestions put forward.

“I hate snakes and think people who choose them as pets should have their heads examined.

“I would also add that owners of large reptiles require regular site inspections/visits to ensure that the ‘pet’ is both well cared for but, more importantly, that it is properly housed and that his aquarium is robust and secure.

“Furthermore, I would suggest that owners only be allowed to keep reptiles until they reach a certain size, at which time the reptile must be turned over to the local zoo.

“Owners of pets considered a danger to those foolish enough to have them in the home should sign a waiver when taking possession that once a certain size the reptile must be released or destroyed. ”

Colleen McDuling said: “Snakes belong in the wild or in accredited snake sanctuaries.

“Snakes have no place in the pet trade.

“Their natural behavior is not taken into consideration and they are often housed in aquariums. This is not acceptable. In short, snakes have no place in the pet trade.”
