UFC star Michael Chandler forced to deny anti-vaxxer after being criticized
Michael Chandler faced strong backlash for not receiving the Covid-19 vaccine, which initially jeopardized his UFC 268 fight with Justin Gaethje
UFC lightweight Michael Chandler has denied being an anti-vaxxer after coming under scrutiny on social media.
Chandler’s Covid-19 vaccination stance put his UFC 268 fight with Justin Gaethje in jeopardy, as New York State issued a proof of vaccination warrant for various indoor activities throughout town .
The 35-year-old – who is not vaccinated – said he would not get the vaccine until it was fully approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
And although the FDA recently approved the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccinations, Chandler has yet to receive the vaccine.
He doubled down on his comments about not being an anti-vaccine and said it was his own choice.
“The funny thing about vaccination is that I didn’t go out, I didn’t do a single story and tell people about the vaccine, I wasn’t on your show and I started talking about the vaccine, “he said on MMA time.
âI was in a private live Instagram session with a few thousand people or whatever.
âFive minutes after I clicked on ‘End Live’ it was MMA Junkie or one of the MMA media came out and said ‘Chandler is not vaxxed’, and I was called an anti-vaxxer.
âI am not an anti-vaccine. Personally, I do not have the vaccine at the moment, I do not know if I will ever receive the vaccine.
UFC President Dana White said last month that he would “never” force the fighters on the list to be vaccinated.
While the New York tenure is still in place, it’s unclear what the UFC’s policy is regarding unvaccinated fighters competing in the state.
Chandler made his UFC debut in January when he knocked out Dan Hooker. He then fought Charles Oliveira for the lightweight title in May, but lost by submission in the second round.
He went on to say that he doesn’t advise others not to get the shot, but just shares his own stance on the jab.

He said: âPersonally, I just believe that we live in the biggest country on the planet. I believe it is the biggest country on the planet because of our individual freedoms and our individual choices.
“Especially when it comes to our body, our medical history and our health.
âIf I had jumped in and done a media tour of how I don’t take the vaccine, or if I told everyone (that) the vaccine was a garbage can or something, of course I would be the one looking for it. to attract attention.
âI was in a private Instagram on my own IG Live with my followers and a few thousand people asking about it. And then the article broke and came out.â
